She agreed and said she'd need a resume to accompany the paperwork.
I didn't even remember the last time I wrote a resume! Lol...
So I was searching everywhere on my laptop that I could have possibly saved it.
No luck.
BUT in searching, I found an essay that I wrote for a scholarship last semester and I wanted to share it with you all.
Here it is.
My freshman year in high school I entered a contest to have a walk-on role on one of my favorite television shows. It was a contest sponsored by John Lennon. One of the choices to enter was to write a song about the American Dream and how it’s changed. This is what I wrote:
American Dreams just aren’t what they seem
Kids growing too fast
People running from their past
Babies having babies
Drive by shootings
What has this world come to?
Chorus
There’s no prayer in school
To smoke is to be cool
No dreams of being teachers
No dreams of being leaders
Children getting beat
Yet they take the heat
For something they didn’t do
Whatever happened to the Golden Rule?
Kids bringing guns to school
Smoking weed, it’s the thing to do
Go to a party, get high,
Never think twice about saying good-bye
American Dreams just aren’t what they seem
What has this world come to?
I didn’t win the contest, now that I read it, my song wasn’t all that good. But I think it gets the point across. The American Dream has changed so much just in the last century. Young people wanted to grow up and do something with their lives, change the world, make a difference. Now they’re content to sit at home jobless. I’m not sure that I can say America has a dream any longer. That’s a sad statement to make but I think it’s the truth.
When I hear young people talk, it’s about drugs, parties and having babies. I overheard a conversation the other day between two 7th graders talking about how they wanted to have a baby with such and such guy. In that same conversation they talked about their friends getting drunk and smoking. If this is the kind of lifestyle future generations have to look forward to, America is in for a treat. Soon we’ll have no one working and everyone will be on welfare with illegitimate children.
The streets of any big city are littered with gangs and violence. Young boys, and sometimes girls, get involved with the wrong crowd and before they know it they’re robbing convenience stores and doing drive-by shootings. It’s very rare that anyone in that situation can get out, they have nothing to look forward to in life.
To summarize, I think America has lost its ability to dream, or should I say to make their dreams reality. There are plenty of dreamers out there who wish for a better life but aren’t serious enough to do anything about it. The American Dream hasn’t been what it used to be for a long time now.
The end.
I wanted to share not because I think it's an especially fantastic essay (I don't) but I'd like your feedback, what do you think about this?
Ps. I found the resume in an email. :)
There's a lot of truth and good insight. The tone could sound more compassionate. I'm not saying you aren't. You are for sure. But let the audience know that you're concerned and want to make a difference (give ideas of taking action) so you present yourself as the leader that you are.
